Seattle SocietyPage.com is a free public news source for nonprofits. Accurate and positive, we love local charities and their vibrant events! We shine a well-deserved spotlight on outstanding nonprofits. With a free Sunday email, subscribers enjoy thoughtful information about positive and proactive movers and shakers in their hometown.

As the editor of Society Page, it’s my privilege to collaborate with Development Officers in the nonprofit community to honor patrons who make a difference. I’ve been a professional journalist and writer since 1987, (and long-time reporter for KOIN-TV.) I’m also a member of the Society of Professional Journalists. As a volunteer with the National Charity League, I’ve seen first-hand the transforming power of authentic community involvement.

SeattleSocietyPage.com also fuels my other professional passion: writing. As a nationally published reporter, with a Master’s Degree in Journalism, I love to report positive news and information. Journalism has also connected me with another non-profit where I’ve had experience as a leader, the Northwest’s biggest writer’s organization: The Willamette Writers. We launched a sister site, PortlandSocietyPage.com, in 2011 and have published nearly 2,000 stories on that site for free.

With SeattleSocietyPage.com, I’m very pleased to provide a news and information website – always free for nonprofits – which highlights exciting charity events!

We’re pleased to introduce our current intern from the University of Washington, Madison Huizinga.

Madison Huizinga

“I’m currently a student at the University of Washington where I plan on majoring in Communication. In addition to interning with Seattle Society Page, I am also a dancer with the Seattle-based dance company Intrepidus Dance. Since I was young, I have felt a huge pull towards the arts. Writing and dancing have always been important tools for me to express my thoughts and emotions, as well as share important stories with the world. Seattle has been my home my entire life and I am so excited to create work that spotlights nonprofits that are enriching the communities around me. In particular, I look forward to learning more about organizations focused on the arts and amplifying their messages for Seattleites to hear.”

“I am currently a Senior at the University of Washington Bothell majoring in Media and Communications Studies. I have a background in video production and enjoy creating online content in my free time. I have always believed that everyone deserves a second chance. If it wasn’t for multiple second chances I wouldn’t be here today. From failing out of 2 community colleges to graduating from Spokane falls with honors. To being able to continue my education at the University of Washington. I have my family to thank for allowing me to make mistakes that some people don’t have the opportunity to make. With all their support I am the first person in my family to attend and in the near future graduate a 4-year university. I have always been surrounded by people who care about our community. From both my parents volunteering at our local church or my older brother starting up a skateboard business in Edmonds. All of this has shown me giving back to our community is important and impacts many lives. I am proud to have this opportunity to intern at Seattle Society Page. I want to highlight the men and women that spend countless hours shaping Seattle and many other areas in Washington into a better place. I am excited to see where this opportunity takes me, and I am eager to learn more about how our community is healing and embracing one another in this uncertain time.

Zoë Thompson is an intern from University of Washington and shares her diverse interests.

“Hi, my name is Zoë Thompson, and I am a student, a boxer,  and a writer.  I am currently pursuing a degree in Communication at the University of Washington, with an intended minor in entrepreneurship.  I was born in Lawrence, Kansas, and raised in Bellingham, Washington, but I have recently fallen in love with Seattle, and I may never leave.

Before moving to Seattle, I was told to “beware of the Seattle freeze,” but upon my arrival, I was shocked to find a community characterized, not by chilliness, but by diligence and passion.  I like to imagine that the silent Seattlites I pass on the street are not frozen, just busy.  They’re hustling because Seattlites know how to hustle, and how to adapt.  I believe that those skills are reflected in the work of Seattle’s non-profits, and I hope that through my work with Seattle Society Page I can adopt (by osmosis!) a little bit of the tenacity I have seen in the Seattle community.

When I’m not studying, working, or writing, I enjoy painting, running, perusing the UW meme page, and boxing with the University of Washington Boxing Team.”

We are so grateful to have Madison, Isaiah and Zoë writing for SeattleSocietyPage.com! Thank you for making a difference in our community by helping to tell the stories of our outstanding local nonprofits!
